Never seen this one till now. B-Art at its best. I’m sic, I luv this flick I haven’t seen this since I was a kid. It still holds-up, good art prodution. Clearly Scott Smith had this in mind when he wrote “Ruins”. This Japanese horror flick starts off like ‘Gilligan’s Island’ and becomes a version of ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’. Too much time is spent establishing the breakdown of camaraderie among the shipwrecked over their survival due to the harsh environment of the mysterious island. In the third act is a classic of a Japanese B-flick. Directed by the legendary Honda Ishiro, this strange and involving tale of psychedelic escapism and the struggle for identity in post-nuclear Japan has been a cult favorite for as long as its been available in the US. More please! This was a good one, in several ways. Not perfect, sometimes not credible–but then are these type supposed to be? Even the ending left me thinking, “But he didn’t…and am very pleased with it–it’s a keeper: widescreen, great color, very good resolution, and subtitles included…. You couldn’t ask for much more in a b-film, which is why I rated it highly. the title of this film is “Matango” and it was released in 1963
